Breastfeeding Can Be Challenging

I help guide mother’s through their breastfeeding journey so they can nourish their babies with confidence.

Natalie Dodson, RN, BSN, IBCLC

Natalie

I have been a Registered Nurse (RN) since 2013 and went on to become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in 2018. I have gained extensive experience while working in hospital’s as a Lactation Consultant in the Mother/Baby unit, as well as, providing support and assistance to our more fragile NICU population.

As a mother, I was inspired to become a lactation consultant after experiencing my own breastfeeding challenges. I was born and raised on the Central Coast and went away to pursue my education in nursing. I returned to the Central Coast in 2017, where I have had the pleasure of working in the community as a lactation consultant.

I find great joy in helping moms succeed in breastfeeding and reaching the goals that they have set for themselves. There are many ways to feed and nurture your baby, and I know each situation is different. I do not use a cookie-cutter approach but instead, I share my knowledge and technical skills with the highest level of compassion and care, personalizing my care to meet your needs. I want each mom to succeed and feel confident that they know how to nourish their baby.

I continue to provide coaching and assistance after I leave our consult through phone calls and/or texts. Always remember, I am one phone call away. I look forward to sharing experiences, challenges, and joys of learning to breastfeed with you.

Natalie received her Bachelors Degree in Nursing at Touro University in Nevada. She received her IBCLC training at UCSD and completed her clinical hours at Twin Cities Hospital. She has worked as a Lactation Consultant at Lompoc Valley Medical Center and went on to work at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center as a Lactation Consultant in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Mother/Baby Unit.

There are many benefits to breastfeeding:

The cells, hormones, and antibodies in breastmilk help protect babies from illnesses. This protection is unique and changes every day to meet your baby’s growing needs.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusively breastfeeding your infant for the first six months of life.  At six months of age, a mother should continue to breastfeed with supplementation of foods for at least one year and up to two years or more for added immunity support.

Research has shown that breastfed babies have lower risks of:

  • Asthma and allergies
  • Childhood Leukemia
  • Childhood Obesity
  • Ear infections
  • Eczema
  • Diarrhea and vomiting
  • Lower respiratory infections
  • Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC), a disease that affects the gastrointestinal tract in premature babies, or babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy
  • Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
  • Type 2 diabetes

Breastfeeding has also been shown to improve a mother's health, healing, and wellbeing following childbirth. Research shows the following benefits:

  • Improves weight loss
  • Lower’s stress levels and reduces postpartum bleeding
  • Reduces the risk of certain types of cancers, including breast cancer and ovarian cancer
